Mission: This circle will fund organizations that build creative and technological capacities for individuals in underserved populations in the United States.
Why act now? Middle-skills jobs are eroding in this age of increased automation - future careers and jobs will require a high level of creative and technological abilities. We already see this happening today - livelihoods are being threatened by seemingly benign advances. For instance, when Otto announced its successful pilot delivery of its autonomous trucks, and when Daimler announced that its Inspiration truck is approved for use on public roads, the jobs of the 3.5 million truck drivers in the US were immediately put in question.
Since we know these transitions will inevitably occur, jobs have to evolve before technology leaves yet more people behind. We must act now to ensure that all people can benefit from advancement in technology, and not instead lose livelihoods because of it.
Who will we support? While there is a preference for grassroots organizations across the US work directly with marginalized communities to reintegrate, empower and prepare them in our increasingly technological job market. We will also support organizations that build such capacities in creative, scalable ways.
How will we support? Members in this circle will contribute a baseline of $10 a month, and more if you prefer. This group will hold 1 grantmaking round every 3 months to nominate, evaluate, vote and fund organizations working toward the aforementioned vision.
Members in the Bay Area will meet in person during grantmaking days, while members outside of the area will be welcome to join by Skype.
